A view on the Eastern-Tyrolian "Debant" Valley and its unique characteres.
Hay-hauling or so called “Heuziehen” is a traditional way of bringing down hay from the high pastures to the valley. In the Eastern-Tyrolian Virgen Valley this art is still practiced in its traditional way. Steep pastures at around 2.000 m above sea-level are mowed in summer and the nutrient rich hay is brought to the valley in winter. The knowledge and technique of “Heuziehen” has been passed on since hundreds of years from generation to generation. The work is hard and dangerous. However, Virgen’s locals know of the importance of carrying on this tradition. The way the steep pastures are mowed is slowing down erosion, is lowering the risks of avalanches, and helps with a divers vegetation. The “Heufuder”, a form of sledge made out of hay balls and two wooden skids, ways around 200 kg and gets brought down the valley only by man power.

The Karamojong are semi-nomadic herders in the remote Karamoja region of Uganda. They are very proud on their history, identity, lifestyle, language, dress code, dance and norms. In the life of the Karamojong cattle play the central role. Cattle are seen like a currency but they are also an important element in the negotiations for a bride or to gain status. The Karamojong are in constant conflict with other tribes in Uganda, Sudan and Kenya due to frequent cattle raids. This could be partly due to a traditional belief that the Karamojong own all the cattle by a divine right. Trough the use of heavy weapons the raids became more and more violent. These raids have now been reduced through disarmament by the government. That has been heavily criticized and not only solved problems.
